Description from the seller

Characterful set of bookends in the distinctive style of the Amsterdam School, dating from circa 1910-1920. This expressive movement within Dutch art and architecture is known for its powerful forms, artisanal finish, and the use of honest materials.

These bookends show exactly what the Amsterdam School is known for: a sculptural build of geometric volumes, with a strong play of horizontal and vertical lines. The stepped shapes and massive appearance give the whole a nearly architectural character, as if they are miniatures of the famous brick buildings from that period.

Made from solid wood and finished in a deep, warm stain that beautifully brings out the grain.

Objects like these were often handmade in the early 20th century, where functionality and design went hand in hand. Bookends like these were not only practical but also intended as a decorative statement on a desk or bookshelf.

A beautiful set for lovers of Art Deco, the Amsterdam School, or early 20th-century design objects.
