Description from the seller
Antique Bronze Copper Milk Jug / Milk Pot with Lid – Swallowtail Joint – Late 19th Century
A particularly characterful antique copper milk jug with lid, crafted at the end of the 19th century. This robust, artisanal household item is a beautiful example of traditional Dutch copper smithing and exudes the atmosphere of rural life from more than a century ago.
The jug is fully handmade from copper and shows clear traces of traditional metalwork. Notably, the swallowtail joint in the body, a classic construction technique where the metal is folded and anchored together. This technique was widely used by copper smiths in the 18th and 19th centuries to make barrels sturdy and watertight without modern welding techniques.
The shape of the jug is typical for historical milk and water jugs: a rounded body, narrow neck, and sturdy handle, making the object both stable when set down and comfortable to carry. The matching copper lid with a handle protected the contents from dirt and insects, which was essential during the transport and storage of milk on farms.
The interior and exterior show a beautiful natural patina developed over time. This patina attests to the age and authentic use of the piece.
Such copper milk and water jugs were commonly used in rural households and on farms in the Netherlands during the 19th century. In addition to their functional role, they are today highly valued as decorative antique objects in country, rustic, or industrial interiors.
Because of its strong form, warm copper luster, and authentic construction, this jug is an attractive collectible for enthusiasts of antique copperware, rural household items, and historically artisanal metalwork.
Condition
Good antique condition with signs of use appropriate to age and wear. Visible patina, minor deformations, and signs of hand crafting that enhance the authentic character.
An authentic piece of artisanal metalwork that is both historically interesting and decoratively particularly appealing.
