Description from the seller
Here is an exceptional example of Aizu lacquer (urushi), one of Japan's most prestigious traditions, crafted by the renowned Nuri-ichi workshop (Seki Lacquer Shop) in Fukushima Prefecture.
The motif, titled “Hatsune” (First Warbler), is inspired by the famous “Hatsune no Chōdo” (Hatsune’s Dowry), classified as a National Treasure of Japan. This original masterpiece was created for Chiyahime, the eldest daughter of the third Tokugawa shogun, on the occasion of her marriage to a member of the Owari Tokugawa family. The motif is drawn from the Hatsune chapter of The Tale of Genji and symbolizes maternal affection and the refined elegance of the Heian court.
This box is magnificently adorned with gold and silver maki-e on a glossy black lacquer. The composition depicts a classic landscape with a bridge, flowing water, pines, and plum blossoms—motifs associated with longevity, resilience, and prosperity. The finesse of the line and the delicate use of metallic powders create remarkable depth and an elegant impression of luxury.
This piece serves as a bunko (document or stationery box), traditionally used to store important papers, letters, or small precious objects. It is both a practical object and a refined decorative work that testifies to the long tradition of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship.

Workshop: Nuri-ichi, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima
