Rare Sèvres porcelain compotier with an S.56 mark under the foot, likely dating to around 1856, in a neoclassical Louis XVI style with camée medallions and a central floral bouquet on a blue ground with gold highlights; diameter 22.3 cm, height 9.5 cm, depth 2.5 cm, weight 490 g, from France, 1850–1900, in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Rare Sèvres Porcelain Compotier - S56 mark with a wheel grind trace (rebus).
Decoration: Cameos and Flowers
Description:
Magnificent cake stand (compotier) in fine porcelain, from the renowned Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres.
Marking: Presence of the green stamp "S. 56" under the foot, indicating possible manufacture in 1856. The mark is milled, indicating a piece sold in the white by the manufactory and then decorated by an exterior Parisian painting workshop of high quality.
Decoration: Rich neoclassical ornamentation (Louis XVI).
The basin is adorned with a central floral bouquet finely painted. The rim and the foot feature cameos (antique-style portraits) on a light blue "celestial blue" background, alternating with rose garlands and fine gold highlights.
Style: Inspired by the famous Catherine II of Russia service.
Condition: Very good condition of the porcelain and the gilding. Note: the central iron mounting stem shows natural oxidation due to age (see photos), but the whole is perfectly stable.
Dimensions: diameter 22.5 cm
A piece of great finesse, to complete a 19th-century porcelain collection or for an exceptional table.
