Description from the seller
Title: Tavern Scene
School: Dutch (XVII)
Style: Baroque genre scene
Technique: Oil on panel
The work represents a lively interior scene in a tavern, characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. At the center of the composition, a group of figures of different ages interact in a casual, everyday atmosphere. A domestic scene stands out with seated and standing figures, some conversing, others watching, while a woman tends to a child in the foreground. On the left, a musician plays an instrument, adding dynamism and reinforcing the festive character of the scene.
The lighting is subdued and focused, with a clear influence of baroque chiaroscuro, directing attention to the main group of figures while the background remains in shadow. The brushwork is meticulous and detailed, typical of the Dutch school, with special attention to facial expressions, fabric textures, and everyday objects. The scene conveys an intimate, genre-narrative, reflecting popular life of the time.
The work presents restorations.
The frame is carved and gilded wood, of notable ornamental richness. It features abundant relief decoration with vegetal motifs, scrolls, and rococo-inspired elements, especially highlighting the corners with sinuous shapes and highly developed volutes. The inner moulding is finely worked, creating an elegant transition toward the painting. The gilding, with an aged patina, lends character and enhances the overall, turning the frame into an element of great aesthetic value that complements the painting.
Dimensions: 16 x 24 cm
Dimensions with frame: 34 x 50 cm
Notes:
