Description from the seller
Title: Tavern Scene
School: Dutch (18th-19th century)
Author: David Teniers, follower of
Style: Baroque genre painting (costumbrista)
Technique: Oil on canvas
The work depicts an interior scene, typically Baroque, set in a rural tavern, where a group of peasants gather around a table participating in a card game. The composition, narrative and genre in nature, shows figures dressed in popular attire of the period, captured in relaxed, everyday attitudes. The lighting, soft but directed, emphasizes the central core of the action, creating a contrast with the darker, deeper background.
On the right, the space opens to an exterior landscape that adds depth to the scene, while in the background a musician is visible, adding dynamism and reinforcing the festive atmosphere. The brushwork is precise and detailed, especially in the faces and in everyday objects, reflecting the clear influence of the circle of David Teniers, characterized by an interest in genre scenes and peasant life.
The work presents restorations, in keeping with its age, and has been re-lined, which ensures its structural stability.
The frame is carved and gilded wood, in a classical style, with abundant relief decoration based on vegetal motifs and scrolls. It features a wide moulding with continuous ornamental work, lending visual richness and enhancing the historical character of the work.
