Description from the seller
Title: Saint Agatha
School: Italian (18th Century)
Style: Devotional Baroque
Technique: Oil on canvas
The present work depicts Saint Agatha, Christian martyr, iconographically identifiable by the attribute of the breasts on a platter, a symbol of her martyrdom. The figure appears in an elegant half-length, with the face slightly tilted and a serene expression, conveying a contained and gathered spirituality, characteristic of Italian Baroque.
The composition is articulated through a marked chiaroscuro, where the figure emerges from a dark background, emphasizing the volumetric modeling of the face and hands. The saint wears rich robes in reddish and golden tones, treated with a loose yet precise brushstroke that suggests the texture of the fabrics. In her right hand she holds a palm, a symbol of martyrdom, while the left rests delicately on the chest, reinforcing the introspective nature of the scene.
The lighting treatment and the sensitivity in the representation of the face recall the Italian naturalist tradition of the 18th century, with influence from tenebrism, where light not only models the forms but also adds emotional charge to the scene.
The work is presented in a carved and gilded wooden frame, in a classical style, with abundant vegetal decoration and relief scrolls. The corners are particularly accented with more voluminous ornamental motifs, lending a solemn character appropriate to the religious theme of the painting. The gilding, slightly aged, harmonizes with the warm palette of the work, enhancing its visual presence.
Observations:
The work shows restorations, consistent with its age. There are slight superficial wear and craquelure typical of the passage of time, without affecting the overall reading of the composition.
The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In such a case, we will require photographs of the defects to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.
Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge due to reasons such as being outside a continental territory, excessive dimensions, or weight of the item. PremiArt will not be responsible for this surcharge under any circumstance.
Due to border issues with Switzerland we are obliged to inform that shipments with more than 1 meter in length or height to that destination will not be carried out.
