Description from the seller
Fascinating bronze sculpture with a dark patina depicting a young fisherman, an emblematic example of the genre portraiture typical of the Neapolitan School at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century (style linked to the famous "scugnizzi" of Vincenzo Gemito or Giovanni De Martino).
The work portrays a boy standing on a naturalistic base that simulates a rock. The youth holds a freshly caught fish in his hands, observing it with an expression of pride and curiosity. The composition is rich in realistic details that enrich the narrative:
Naturalistic details: At the boy's feet, on the rock, a small crab and a shell (murece), as well as a basket for the catch placed at the back, are visible.
Anatomical rendering: Excellent modeling of the muscles and movement, with particular care in rendering the curly hair and the loincloth tied at the hips.
Base: The sculpture rests on an octagonal cream/pink marble base, which elevates the figure and ensures stability.
Conditions and Details
Material: Bronze.
Base: Shaped marble.
Conservation status: The piece is in generally good condition. As highlighted in the close-up photos, there are some superficial marks and scratches on the patina of the left leg, typical of bronze age, which do not compromise the overall aesthetics but attest to the piece's authenticity. The marble base shows light signs of use.
Stamps/Signatures: On the bottom of the marble base there is an inked inventory/catalog number "1361". No obvious signatures are reported on the metal.
