Italy circa 1970-1980

Beautifully carved statue depicting Saint Anthony of Padua with the infant Jesus in his arm.

Saint Anthony is one of the most popular Catholic saints and is best known as the patron saint of lost things. In iconography, as in this statue, he is often recognizable by the following features:

The infant Jesus: Refers to a vision that he is said to have had.

Franciscan habit: A brown robe with a white knotted cord as a belt, indicating that he was a member of the Franciscan order.

Lilies: He often holds white lilies, which symbolize purity and chastity.
Tonsure: The distinctive shaved crown of a monk.

Wooden statues of this type are often produced by specialized woodcarving studios, such as those in the Val Gardena region in northern Italy.

Dimensions: 28.5 cm high, 10 cm wide and 7.5 cm deep.

Condition: in good condition, a few spots.
