Biography
Claes Oldenburg, born in Stockholm as the son of a diplomat, grew up in Sweden and the United States. He studied at Yale University in New Haven until 1954 and then attended the Art Institute in Chicago. In 1956 he moved to New York City, where he still lives today. Oldenburg is regarded as a leading representative of American Pop Art. He is known for his reproductions of everyday objects and foods, which he distorts through monumental scale or by the use of fabrics, for example. Thus, in 1977 for the Skulptur.Projekte in Münster he created three giant billiard balls, and for documenta 7 in 1982 in Kassel a 12-meter-tall pickaxe.
