Description from the seller
Exquisite small Provençal bureau or chest of drawers dating from the 19th century, in the Louis XV style. This light desk stands on four curved legs. Its front features a lower section with two pulls and a upper section with two smaller panels, in addition to the drop-front writing surface, the bureau itself. The hardware includes keyhole escutcheons and hinges in antique iron. This discreet front-folding service piece houses inside two small drawers and additional compartments typical of a desk. Lightweight, practical, and versatile furniture.
The Provençal style originated in France, in the Provence region, in the 18th century. It began and developed following the premises of the sophisticated and rich Louis XV style, but adapted to the mansions of the French countryside where the aristocracy, and later the bourgeoisie of the time, recreated a warm atmosphere. These secondary homes sought to serve as a kind of escape and place of rest from the frenetic life of these great aristocrats, hence a choice of comforting decoration inspired by nature. It thus became a romantic break from the palatial ostentation of the court. This style draws inspiration from the natural beauty of its place of origin, rural spaces filled with vineyards, fields in bloom, etc. The preferred material is wood, helping to create a warm and welcoming ambiance, typically with a worn appearance.
