Description from the seller
Sade (Donatien Alphonse François de) / Saint-Justh Xavier - The Crimes of Love: Eugenie de Franval - Editions d’Albusse - 1966
This luxury edition was printed on Vélin paper, pure linen rag, in only 990 numbered copies, this one bearing number 501.
The work contains 8 original lithographs by Xavier Saint-Justh, including illustrated initials.
Donatien Alphonse François de Sade (1740-1814), known as the Marquis de Sade, was a French writer and philosopher whose work explores the themes of transgression and absolute desire. Imprisoned for nearly thirty years under different regimes, he wrote most of his texts in prison to escape confinement through the imagination. This narrative, excerpted from the collection "Les Crimes de l'amour", was originally published in 1800 after being written during his long confinement at the Bastille in the late 1780s.
Xavier Saint-Justh (1927-2005) was a French painter and illustrator active in the mid-20th century. His elegant and suggestive line work lends itself particularly to bibliophilic erotic and classical editions of the 1960s. Through his lithographs, he succeeds in conveying the psychological tension and sensuality inherent in Sade's stories.
The book recounts the tragic story of Eugenie de Franval, a young girl educated by her father according to libertine and immoral principles, inevitably leading to family destruction and decline.
Publisher’s binding in mauve morocco case with gilt title, overall in very good condition.
