Description from the seller
Paul Blanca (1958-2021) was a Dutch photographer, known for his confrontational and emotionally intense self-portraits. In the 1980s he gained fame with powerful black-and-white photographs about violence and vulnerability. Robert Mapplethorpe once called him his only rival.
His iconic self-portrait from 1986, in which he carved a crying Mickey Mouse into his back, is an important work in Dutch photography. Blanca’s photo series Par la Pluie des Femmes showed real tears by evoking deep emotions.
His career was shadowed by controversy, including an alleged involvement in the attack on Rob Scholte in 1995. In 2022 the Fotomuseum Den Haag honored his work with a major exhibition. Blanca’s legacy remains an intense exploration of human suffering and emotion
