Contents
Set in eighteenth-century Naples during the Enlightenment, The Volcano Lover reimagines the real life of Sir William Hamilton, his wife Emma, and Admiral Horatio Nelson. Through their intertwined passions, Sontag explores themes of art, desire, politics, and the impulse to collect — an obsession with beauty and possession that reflects the upheavals of the era. Sontag’s introductory essay for this edition traces the origins of the novel and its fascination with the culture and aesthetic ideals of the period. The volume also includes a color frontispiece by John Rush, specially commissioned for this Franklin edition, as well as additional illustrations based on historical engravings.
