Bookends (2) - nr. 12 - Wood - Modernist Bookends
Pair of Large Dutch Art Deco Bookends,
A striking pair of large Art Deco bookends. Both pieces are marked S.V.H. to the side and numbered 12 on the back.
The design is wonderfully architectural: a composition of stepped, rounded vertical blocks in contrasting wood tones, set against a black ebonised back and base. Visually a strong design - effect of a miniature skyline or a stylised theatre façade, with warm golden and brown woods set against the darker frame.
Woodtypes are oak, cherry and walnut.
The S.V.H. mark most likely refers to S.V.H. / originally Simons-Veerkade-Haag, a Dutch manufacturer that was active from the late 1800s until the late 1900s, and was known for paper, cardboard and office-related products. As bookends sit naturally within the manufacturing of office products, the attribution feels plausible (source: https://www.joodserfgoeddenhaag.nl/papierfabriek-esveha/)
These bookend's generous size makes them particularly decorative. They are large and quite heavy which is handy too for actual use.
Condition is good, with some visible age-related wear, scratches and marks around the edges and bases.
