Description from the seller
19th-Century English School
Portrait of a Scottish Terrier – Naturalistic Study
Elegant portrait of a dog attributed to the 19th-century English school, executed with great painting sensitivity and attention to natural data.
The work depicts a refined black Scottish Terrier, shown in profile on a neutral background. The artist focuses on the rendition of the coat, worked with a soft, layered brushstroke that effectively conveys the typical rough texture of the breed. Erect ears, elongated snout, and well-defined beard are treated with precision, making the subject immediately recognizable.
The gaze, intense and vigilant, gives the animal strong presence and testifies to a sensitivity typical of British animal painting, particularly developed in the 19th century, a period during which the representation of purebred dogs enjoyed widespread diffusion.
The composition, essential and devoid of decorative elements, fully valorizes the subject and fits within the tradition of English naturalistic studies, characterized by direct observation and a realistic approach.
Signature present at the bottom right, difficult to read.
Oil on canvas, in good overall conservation state, with normal signs of aging. Canvas mounted on a wooden frame.
Careful shipping with packaging. Please note that postal shipping, while the most economical solution, is not the ideal method for artworks and does not guarantee the absence of risks, especially for original supports and frames. In-person pickup in Geneva is recommended. Tracked shipping; insurance on request and at the buyer’s expense. Any customs duties and longer international delivery times remain the buyer’s responsibility.
In case of return of the lot, shipping costs for reshipment will be charged to the buyer.
Please note that these costs may also apply within Europe.
