Description from the seller
Item Description
This is an exquisite Koishiwara Takatori-yaki tea bowl from the renowned Takatori Hassen Kiln. The bowl features elegant calligraphy of the characters "Kotobuki" meaning longevity and celebration, hand-painted in grey-black iron slip on a refined cream-colored glaze. The piece embodies the aesthetic principles of traditional Takatori ware, characterized by its delicate thin walls and smooth, lustrous finish that demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship.
Takatori Hassen Kiln carries a distinguished lineage spanning over 400 years, descending from the Korean potter Hachizo who was brought to Japan during the Korean campaigns and was granted the Takatori name by the Kuroda clan. The kiln specializes in tea ceremony wares under the guidance of the Enshu school, maintaining the refined "Kireisabi" aesthetic that has made Takatori ware one of Japan's most revered ceramic traditions.
The bowl's rounded form sits gracefully on an exposed terracotta foot ring, showcasing the natural clay body beneath the milky glaze. The calligraphy is executed with confident, expressive brushstrokes, adding artistic value to this functional tea vessel. This piece comes in its original signed wooden box, authenticating its provenance as a work from this historic kiln.
As a celebratory piece bearing auspicious characters, this tea bowl would be perfect for special occasions or as a treasured addition to any collection of Japanese tea ceremony ceramics.
