Description from the seller
Pair of sculptures, 'Solomonic columns', carved wood, gilded and polychromed, 18th c. – Spain
Material: Carved, gilded and polychromed wood
Period: 18th century
Country of origin: Spain
Good condition for age and use
Dimensions: 100 x 18 x 18 cm.
Magnificent pair of solomonic columns belonging to the decorative structure of an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece. These pieces would originally be attached to the retable structure, hence their ornamentation concentrates on the visible face; on the back face you can see the carved wood but bare, without gold and barely polychromed.
The solomonic columns twist on their own axis with a serpentine shape. Their entire surface is decorated with gilded vegetal motifs on a red background and the helicoidal twist in a deep green. They are topped by an intricate Corinthian capital, full of delicate acanthus leaves curving outward. The gold leaf technique is notable for its quality.
Solomonic columns are a type of architectural column characterized by their helical shape, similar to a screw, and decorated with vegetal motifs. This architectural style originated in 16th-century Italy and became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe and Latin America.
