An antique pair of cased German silver proportional dividers by Elliott Brothers of 449 The Strand, London, dating them to 1864-1886. Elliott Brothers was established in 1854 by Frederick and Charles Elliott, expanding from their father William Elliott's mathematical instrument business. The "Elliott Bros London" marking indicates this dates to the 1864-1886 period when the company operated from 449 The Strand Proportional dividers were essential drafting instruments used for scaling drawings up or down while maintaining proportional accuracy, they feature graduated scales that allow precise proportional measurements for engineering, architectural, and cartographic work, the scales on this pair engraved variously 'Circles', 'Lines', 'Plans', 'Solids' and the Elliot Brothers name all in a period script. Made of German silver (nickel-silver alloy), which was the premium material for precision instruments due to its durability and resistance to tarnishing.
