Description from the seller
Joost van den Vondel - Palamedes or Murdered Folly - Amersfoort, Pieter Brakman, 1707. [Bound with] Satirical Poems - Amersfoort, Pieter Brakman, 1707 - contemporary parchment binding.
Complete with all engravings per the binder’s instructions, including the fold-out engraving of the beheading of Oldenbarnevelt and the portraits of Grotius, the De Witt brothers and William II.
Palamedes is a defense of the 1619 execution of Oldenbarnevelt and an attack on, among others, stadholder Maurits. The work was banned and was not first issued until 1705 together with Vondel’s other satirical poems, by the Rotterdam publisher Pieter van der Veer, who apparently did not dare use his own name, so the book appeared under the fictitious publisher Pieter Brakman from Amersfoort.
No shipping to the United States.
