Description from the seller
RAAK Amsterdam Wall Sconce with Coloured Glass, Netherlands, 1960s
A striking wall sconce by RAAK Amsterdam, produced in the Netherlands. This little lamp is made from black lacquered metal and fitted with five coloured glass elements in red, green, blue and warm amber tones.
The design plays beautifully with contrast: the black metal housing forms a sober architectural frame, while the coloured glass pieces bring a vivid, gemstone like quality . When lit, the lamp creates a warm glow behind the fixture, while the glass details become small illuminated colour fields across the front. A compact accent piece with graphic presence.
This model is closely related in spirit to RAAK’s Alchemy and Collage lamps by Willem van Oyen, where coloured glass and light are used as a composition.
RAAK Amsterdam was founded in 1954 and became one of the most important Dutch lighting manufacturers of the post-war period. The company was known for modern, functional and inventive lighting, often combining clean forms with glass and coloured metal.
RAAK collaborated with designers including Bertrand Balas, Maija Liisa Komulainen and Sergio Asti, and its lamps are still very much sought after today.
Condition
Good vintage condition with signs of age and use. The black lacquered metal shows some wear and marks, visible in the photographs. The coloured glass elements are in good condition. The lamp has been rewired.
Dimensions: 20 cm high x 13 cm wide x 9 cm deep / 7.9 in high x 5.1 in wide x 3.5 in deep
Doesn't have a Raak label but design is well documented.
