Chinoiserie Table Lamp with Custom Shade, circa 1900 A highly decorative chinoiserie table lamp, made of wood and decorated with painted Orientalist landscape scene. The lamp was acquired as a circa 1900 piece; while the exact date is difficult to determine, its detailing and chinoiserie decoration place it beautifully in the late 19th to early 20th-century decorative tradition. Also, these kind of Eastern-inspired aesthetics were very popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Europe. The wooden base has a tall, elegant trumpet shape, widening gently towards the foot. This gives the lamp a graceful silhouette, almost like a small column or vase form. Around the base, the decoration unfolds in miniature: pagoda architecture, figures in traditional dress and fine gilt linework. The darker lacquered ground, with warm reddish-brown tones underneath, gives the whole piece a rich, atmospheric quality. The raised and painted details add depth to the surface, while the gold lines catch the light in a subtle way. It is decorative without becoming overly heavy: a small piece of interior theatre, full of landscape, story and shadow. The lamp has been professionally rewired and works with one E27 lightbulb. It is fitted with a new custom-made shade in a warm coral-orange tone, finished with a dark trim.
