Description from the seller
Large copper repoussé wall plaque – P.P. Rubens (1577–1640) – cartouche form – ca. 1900
Very decorative and exceptionally large wall plaque made in repoussé copper, featuring a portrait of the famous Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640).
The plaque has a distinctive asymmetric cartouche shape, inspired by Baroque heraldic ornamentation, which sets this piece apart from the usual round wall panels. The portrait is richly worked with fine detailing in the beard, clothing and face.
The edge is reinforced with iron (magnetic), while the plaque itself consists of a copper alloy (non-magnetic). Back side equipped with hanging provision.
This type of wall decoration was produced in Europe in the early 20th century, in a historicising style, with a clear reference to Flemish Baroque and art history.
Dimensions & weight:
Width: ca. 74.5 cm
Height: ca. 60 cm
Weight: ca. 1636 grams
Material:
Repoussé copper with iron edge/reinforcement
