Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Rare and large Burmese lime pot made of high-quality bronze, pumpkin-shaped, which, in Burma, holds a special place, blending spiritual symbolism and culinary importance. According to legend, the different regions of Burma contributed to filling a pumpkin that created humanity when it opened. And from a culinary point of view, it is an important food that provides vitamins and energy, especially during the rainy season. It served as a container for hydrated lime, which, mixed with areca nut and spices and wrapped in a betel leaf, was chewed to produce an euphoric effect. This practice continues, notably in Burma (Myanmar).
It is in three parts, the two sections where the lime was stored are separated by a movable element; the box also has an ornate ring. There are also engraved letters that could be either the owner's name or the manufacturer's name.
During my many trips to Burma, I have never encountered another lime pot of this size and weight
6.8 cm in height, 7.6 cm in diameter, 12 cm in width with the handle, 687 g.
Circa early 20th century, perhaps older.
CONDITION
Excellent condition for a piece from that era, very beautiful patina, lime residues (see photos).
Will be carefully packaged, traceable shipping.
