Description from the seller
Glazed earthenware jug from the Petrus Regout & Cie factory in Maastricht, adorned with the “Pompeii” decor, produced in the second half of the 19th century, more precisely between 1878 and 1885 as indicated by the sphinx-mark crowned accompanied by the inscription “Medaille 1851” visible under the base. This model belongs to the refined production of the Dutch manufacturer, strongly marked by the fashion for historicist and Orientalist designs then in vogue in Europe.
The piece presents an elegant, well-balanced form, with a globular body resting on a slight foot, a narrowed neck flaring toward a widely rimmed pouring spout, and a tall, arched, ribbed handle firmly attached from shoulder to neck. The decoration, applied by transfer and highlights, unfolds on a milky white ground and depicts a dense composition mixing scrolling vines, stylized flowers, and elements inspired by the Far East. On the body, a central cartouche features an ensemble of vases resting on a plinth, rendered in deep blue, surrounded by flowers in red-orange, pink, and pale green tones, finely outlined in black. The upper register is animated by undulating motifs and floral garlands, while the handle itself is adorned with delicately drawn flowering stems. The whole offers a subtle contrast between the graphic rigor of the blue and the softness of the polychromy.
The condition is excellent. The glaze is well preserved, bright and uniform, with colors remaining vivid. Only a fine horizontal crazing in the glaze at the level of the spout is noted, with no structural impact or notable alteration to the overall appearance. No chips or restorations to report.
Founded at the beginning of the 19th century in Maastricht, the Petrus Regout & Cie factory quickly established itself as one of the leading ceramic production centers in the Netherlands, developing a wide range of fine majolica inspired by English and French productions. From the 1870s, the factory adopted more elaborate marks, such as the crowned sphinx, and multiplied historicist décors such as “Pompeii,” reflecting a taste for antique references and exotic influences. This jug fully illustrates this period of expansion and stylistic maturity of the manufactory.
