Description from the seller
Splendid and authentic example of Kuba textile, identifiable as a ceremonial female skirt (Ntshak), originating from the Kasai region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This piece is a masterpiece of abstract geometry, typical of the Bushoong ethnicity.
Technique and Materials: The fabric is entirely handmade using raffia palm fibers. The base is woven on vertical looms by men and subsequently decorated by women with complex embroidery and applications of black fabric obtained with natural organic pigments.
Design: The motif features the classic Kuba "grid" pattern, enriched with geometric symbols that vary along the panel. These designs are not only aesthetic, but also represent the owner’s social status and identity.
Condition: The fabric is in excellent vintage condition. The fiber has acquired a beautiful golden patina typical of the era. The characteristic wavy and hand-finished edges are present, a sign of authenticity and ceremonial use (not a modern tourist reproduction).
Dimensions: 322x69 cm.
Why collect it?
Kuba textiles have inspired great 20th-century artists such as Matisse and Picasso. This piece is ideal both as an investment in tribal art and as an exclusive interior design element, perfect for wall display. Insured shipping included.
