It is perhaps not surprising that Elliot Erwitt, with his laconic eye for multiple meanings, has been captivated by the enigma of “couples” throughout his career. “The subject interests me a great deal, for I have myself experienced it from time to time – sometimes with happiness, sometimes not,” Erwitt says. “I have taken many photos on this subject within the natural setting of my favorite pastime: photography.” Here, two California lovers are caught kissing in the rear-view mirror of their car.
About the photographer:
American photographer, member of Magnum Photos since 1953, Elliott Erwitt has portrayed his contemporaries with empathy and mischief. Gifted with a rare intelligence for situations, he has managed to touch universal feelings. His images are straightforward, immediately understandable, without obvious stylistic effects. His camera accompanies him at every moment. His spaces of observation are the street, museums, the beach, or public gardens. In his small theater of the absurd, the domestic dog holds a special place. “To make people laugh is one of the most perfect successes one can hope for,” he repeats modestly. This image of a dilettante hardly conceals a subtle gaze, a humanism punctuated by a solid sense of humor and wryness.
