Description from the seller

The painting depicts a typical scene of seafaring life in the Gulf, probably inspired by the shores between Naples and the nearby localities.

In the foreground appear two fishing boats with fishermen engaged in daily work: one rows, the others seem to tend to the nets or the catch. The figures, though small and only sketched, are enlivened by bright touches of color that recall the everyday clothing of Neapolitan fishermen.

The sea is the real protagonist: its surface is rendered with rapid, luminous brushstrokes that capture the characteristic light of the Gulf of Naples, with green and blue reflections. This way of handling water is characteristic of Neapolitan painting from the 19th to the early 20th century, very attentive to atmospheric effects and the immediate rendering of light.

On the left emerge rocks, a common element in the coastal landscapes of Campania, while in the background a coastline or a pier is glimpsed, suggesting the presence of a harbor. Further away, a sailing boat with a light sail and some seabirds complete the scene, adding depth and movement.

The sky, broad and luminous, with light clouds, contributes to that serene, everyday atmosphere typical of the Neapolitan school: not a dramatic representation of the sea, but an harmonious and almost idyllic vision of the fishermen’s life, where light, color, and immediacy matter more than precise detail.
