Description from the seller

Art Deco Dressing Table, Mahogany Wood, 1930 – France

Exquisite Art Deco dressing table made around 1930 in mahogany. Of elegant shapes, this vanity is arranged in two distinct parts, the cabinet itself and the completely circular mirror. Its design is set in an asymmetric line, playing with the sinuosity of the profiles, as well as with space, with its indents and protrusions, and with light, creating magnificent shadows.

On the left it presents three compartments with circular bronze handles. Beside it, in a very innovative way, a door is created that goes unnoticed, with a highly curved surface, featuring a lock and key. Inside, veneered with limoncillo wood in its characteristic yellowish color. All this part, including the drawers and the door, has a glass top.

On the right, beneath the mirror, two small shelves. The entire piece is raised off the floor by a curved plinth. The structure is made of solid wood veneered with mahogany, with its characteristic tiger grain and reddish color. Highly glossy lacquer that enhances the furniture’s sumptuousness. If one considers these features (high-quality materials, glossy lacquer and sinuous profile), there are similarities with designs by Jules Leleu. It is a highly decorative piece that is individually functional, playing with space.

About the Art Deco style…

Art Deco, short for the French term Arts Décoratifs, and sometimes simply called Déco, is a style of visual arts, architecture and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s (just before World War I) and thrived especially in the United States, but also in Europe, during the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and luxurious materials. At its peak, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. From its beginnings, Art Deco was influenced by the bold geometric shapes of Cubism and the Vienna Secession; the vivid colors of Fauvism and Russian Ballet; the updated craftsmanship of furniture from the Louis XVI and Louis-Philippe eras; and the exotic styles of China, Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt and Mayan art. It featured rare and costly materials, such as ebony and ivory, and exquisite craftsmanship. The Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and other New York skyscrapers built during the 1920s and 1930s are monuments to the style.

Total dimensions: 159 x 157 x 39 cm. Mirror dimensions: 100 cm.
