Description from the seller
Title:
The Limerick – G. Legman – 1st original edition, Paris 1953 – Full red morocco binding – Rare bibliophile book
Description:
Title: The Limerick: 1700 Examples, with Notes, Variants and Index
Editor/Compiler: Gershon Legman (anonymous at publication)
Publisher: Les Hautes Études / Société des Hautes Études, Paris
Date: 1953 — printed on November 12, 1953, on the presses of "La Ruche", 20 rue Lalande, Paris XIV
Edition: First and only original edition
Description of the work:
This work is regarded as the largest collection of limericks ever published, erotic or not. Gershon Legman, American folklorist and scholar (1917–1999), gathers 1,700 limericks in English, two-thirds of which come from oral sources collected in Ann Arbor (Michigan, 1938–1941), Berkeley (California, 1942–1947) and New York (1941–1952). The work is enriched with scholarly notes, variants, and a complete index of names and rhymes. The work had to be published in Paris, because no American publisher accepted it at the time.
Description of the binding:
The copy presented has been bound in full red morocco by a quality bindery. It features:
Five raised spine nerves with gold lettering ("The Limerick")
Gilded edges
Multicolored head ribbon
Smooth boards in bright red grain morocco
Interior in very good condition, pages slightly yellowed with age (normal for a 1953 book)
This bibliophile binding of high quality makes this edition particularly precious and unique.
Condition: Good to very good — solid binding, pages yellowed (normal), some light wear at the corners.
Shipping: Colissimo, Chronopost or Mondial Relay — buyer's choice.
