Mid-century modern camping table dating from 1955–1965, with a Formica top and chrome underframe, made from particleboard with a wood appearance, 58.5 cm high and a 40 x 48 cm top, weighing about 4.5 kg, in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Very nice coffee table from the 1950s – 1960s with a Formica top and chrome base. The table is 58.5 cm high and the top measures 40 cm x 48 cm. It weighs about 4.5 kg. The coffee table dates from the 1950s or early 1960s of the last century and is 100% original. It probably originates from the Netherlands. It could, for example, be from Brabantia, but this is hard to verify.
The table can of course be used as a plant stand, but also as a charming side table for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. It could even serve as a pedestal for a statue or a vase.
The table shows the usual signs of use, but for its age (between 60 and 70 years) it still looks very good. The chrome is almost like new and the Formica is still nicely intact and even in color. One edge, on its side, has a little come loose. This is because the particleboard to which the Formica is glued has swollen slightly due to moisture (see photo). This minimal sign of use can be fixed by gluing, but it is not necessary.
After World War II, Formica became very popular. The material was seen as modern, hygienic and durable, which fit perfectly with the new functional kitchens. These tables, often with chrome or wood bases, were known for easy maintenance, heat resistance and stain resistance.
Very convenient is that the base can be removed from the top by hand with two screws, making the table very easy to store (and transport) (see photos). It is quite possible that this table was originally made to be taken camping; that indeed began to grow popular in the late 1950s. But of course this atmospheric vintage table fits into any kind of interior; very mid-century, very atmospheric!
The side table is carefully packed and insured for shipping.
