Description from the seller

A large decorative French faience piece, of exceptional size, with an octagonal chamfered outline, made of tin-glazed earthenware with a white glaze and monochrome blue decoration.

The piece presents a narrative scene titled “La Rixe” (the fight), depicting a lively tavern scene with several characters in violent and caricatured poses, within a composition of strong popular and satirical character. This type of iconography is inspired by the tradition of narrative French faience, particularly in the line of the so-called “speaking faiences.”

Signed “Michaud” on the bottom, probably corresponding to the decorator or workshop.

The reverse shows a large unglazed reserve area, typical of large-size pieces during firing, which confirms its artisanal character. It shows natural glaze crazing in keeping with its age.

Epoch: late 19th century
Origin: France
Material: faience (tin-glazed earthenware)
Decoration: blue glaze on a white background
Condition: good overall condition with age-related crazing
