La Figlia di Iorio by Luigi Simeoni is a 1st edition Italian softcover (brossura) published by Giannini di Napoli in 1907, consisting of 557 pages with dimensions 23 x 16 cm, in good condition and featuring a dedication on the frontispiece, and is currently a rare item in the antiquarian market.
Description from the seller
Softcover (editorial bind), 557 pages, dimensions 23 x 16 cm, gift inscription on the frontispiece, a couple of scuffs on the spine and edges of the cover due to the fragility of the binding, but of little consequence compared to the dating of the work. Light uniform browning of the pages as highlighted in the photos, but overall a valid copy, of great rarity. Currently unavailable on the antiquarian market.
Here is a structured and in-depth summary on La figlia di Iorio: for Gabriele D’Annunzio and the Italian Society of Authors: printed reduction, illicit recitation, parody: in the trial against Eduardo Scarpetta for Il figlio di Iorio. The case arises in 1904, when Scarpetta stages Il figlio di Iorio, a parody of the D’Annunzian tragedy.
The Italian Society of Authors lodges a complaint for plagiarism and unauthorized performance.
Scarpetta had shown the manuscript to D’Annunzio, who laughed and gave oral consent, later never confirmed.
Shortly before the premiere, D’Annunzio sends a telegram forbidding it.
The parody nevertheless goes on stage → the lawsuit begins.
The trial lasts about four years and becomes a national case.
documents in real time (circa 1907) the debate on copyright and parody;
offers a meticulous reconstruction of the process;
preserves materials today rare: printed reductions, acts, testimonies, critical analyses;
represents a primary source for studying:
the reception of D’Annunzio,
the figure of Scarpetta,
the birth of the modern notion of parody as an exception to copyright law
