Description from the seller
A beautiful old oil painting of a colorful bouquet by the German painter Bernd Funke (1902–1988).
Medium: Oil on hardboard
Framed dimensions: 41 x 35 x 3 cm
Dimensions without frame: approx. 30 x 23 cm
Bernd Funke (1902–1988) was a German artist known mainly for his realistic oil paintings of landscapes, still lifes in vibrant colors, and portraits. During World War II, Funke worked as a war artist in various countries such as France, Russia, and Romania. He was born in 1902 in Essen (Germany) and passed away in 1988 in Heide (Germany).
His works, like this flower still life, are often characterized by a loose brushwork and lively color palette.
The painting was purchased while the artist was still alive (purchased in February 1975 according to the label on the back). At that time he had established himself as a freelance artist and lived in Tellingstedt (Germany).
Exactly in that year, in April 1975, his works were exhibited in the Domcafé in Meldorf, which was even reported by the Dithmarscher Landeszeitung. In the 1970s he perfected his vivid, late-impressionist style.
The light frame with a dark inner border is a stylistic element commonly used in the mid-20th century to emphasize the painting's color brilliance.
