Description from the seller
Title: The Milkmaid – Costumbrista Style
School: European (19th Century)
Style: Costumbrism with realist influence
Technique: Oil on canvas
The scene portrays a young milkmaid in a calm, introspective stance, leaning on a work utensil, possibly a staff or domestic tool. The figure is seated, dressed in traditional attire of sober tones: a light blouse with puffed sleeves and an apron in bluish hues, elements characteristic of European genre painting.
Beside her is a metal vessel, probably intended for milk, reinforcing the everyday, working theme of the scene. The dark background, treated with soft, diffused lighting, focuses attention on the female figure, highlighting her face and hands through delicate chiaroscuro. The brushwork is smooth, with subtle transitions, evidencing a naturalist intention typical of the 19th century.
The composition conveys serenity and contemplation, moving away from narration to center on the dignity of everyday life. The overall atmosphere suggests an influence of early realism and European costumbrism.
The work is presented in a carved, gilded wooden frame, with perimetral decoration of geometric motifs and stepped moldings. The gilding shows patina and wear consistent with its age, adding character and authenticity to the whole. The frame reinforces the classical aesthetic of the piece and harmonizes with its overall tonality.
Conservation status:
The work shows signs of aging typical of its era, with light surface dirt and possible craquelure. Restorations are present.
Dimensions:
61 x 81 cm (artwork)
94 x 76 cm (with frame)
Observations:
The work may incur damage during transport although proper packaging is used. In that case, we will need photographs of the damage to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.
Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by an surcharge due to causes such as being outside a continental territory, excessive dimensions, or weight of the item. PremiArt will not be responsible for this surcharge under any circumstance.
Due to border issues with Switzerland, we must inform you that shipments with a length or height over 1 meter to that destination will not be carried out.
