Description from the seller
Cornucopia in silvered metal by the Magrino Brothers
Italy, 20th century
Elegant decorative cornucopia crafted by the Magrino Brothers, an Italian manufactory known for producing ornamental and home objects in silvered metal, characterized by a richly detailed naturalistic style and traditional taste. The piece features a relief composition of fruits, grape clusters, and foliage finely chiselled, gathered within the classic horn of plenty shape. The silvered surface, with a natural patina of age, enhances the sculptural modeling and the strong decorative impact of the whole.
The cornucopia, also called the horn of plenty, is one of the oldest symbols universally associated with prosperity, fertility, and good fortune. Its origins lie in Greek mythology: according to the myth, the horn belonged to the goat Amalthea, the nurse of Zeus, and it acquired the power to endlessly provide food and wealth. Over the centuries the motif of the cornucopia has been widely used in European decorative arts as an emblem of well-being, hospitality, and the fertility of nature.
In this interpretation by the Magrino Brothers, abundance is evoked through a generous composition of ripe fruits and leaves, rendered with a scenographic flair and strong artisanal sensitivity. The object fits into the Italian tradition of table and drawing-room décor of the 20th century, particularly valued for the execution quality and the ornamental elegance.
Conditions: slight signs of time and use consistent with its age; oxidized patina in some spots.
Notes on the Magrino Brothers
The Magrino Brothers were active in Italy in the 20th century producing decorative objects in silvered metal and ornamental alloys. Their creations—often inspired by naturalistic, allegorical, and classical themes—targeted a bourgeois traditional market, with particular attention to decorative renderings and the richness of detail. Today Magrino-branded objects are sought after by collectors of Italian decorative arts of the 20th century, especially for their craftsmanship and the scenographic character of the compositions.
