Description from the seller
Opera Omnia of Saint Augustine, Tomus II (1576) – Plantin edition
Important volume from the 16th century containing the second volume of the works of Saint Augustine, one of the greatest Fathers of the Church.
Frontispiece with an elegant printer's mark and indication of printing in Antwerp (Antverpiae) at the workshop of Christophe Plantin, one of the most famous printers in Europe during the Renaissance, dated 1576.
In-folio (cm 38.3 × 25); pp. 414. Classical binding in parchment with a manuscript title on the spine. Text in Latin arranged in two columns. Presence of woodcut initials and printer’s mark. A genuine copy, with normal signs of time: browning, light waviness and some signs of use, Copy tending to opening/ gaping, but overall well preserved.
The volume collects a significant portion of Augustine’s production, particularly epistles and theological texts, fundamental for Western Christian doctrine. The works address themes such as grace, faith, morality, and interpretation of Scripture, offering a direct testimony of patristic thought.
Cinquecentennial edition of great importance, printed by Plantin, a central figure in the history of European printing. His editions are valued for typographic excellence and philological rigor. Volumes of this format and period, complete and in good condition, are increasingly rare on the antiquarian market, sought after by collectors and scholars of book history, theology, and humanistic culture.
A work of high historical and collector’s value.
