【Product details】

This substantial rectangular serving plate by Masamune Hiromitsu (正宗弘光) was created during the Heisei period, circa 1998–2008. The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden box and matching cloth.

The plate displays the distinctive character of Bizen ware, one of Japan’s oldest and most celebrated ceramic traditions. Bizen ware is admired for its unglazed surface, earthy texture, and naturally occurring kiln effects created solely through fire and clay without applied enamel. The warm reddish-brown surface and expressive firing marks give the work a refined rustic beauty deeply appreciated by tea masters, scholars, and collectors throughout Japanese history.

A particularly striking feature of this piece is the hidasuki pattern, the dark linear markings crossing the surface. Hidasuki is a traditional firing effect created when straw wrapped around the vessel during firing reacts with the iron-rich clay, producing dramatic scarlet and dark-toned streaks. These natural kiln effects make every piece unique and are highly valued in Bizen ceramics. The soft undulating form and gently raised edges further enhance the organic aesthetic and practical functionality of the work as a serving dish.

Masamune Hiromitsu was born in 1975 in Honami, Bizen City. After graduating from the Bizen Pottery Centre in 1997, he apprenticed under the Bizen ceramic artist Shibaoka Kōichi. He later returned to work under his father, Masamune Chiharu, while establishing his own artistic career. Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, he received numerous awards and selections in important Japanese ceramic exhibitions, including the Okayama Prefectural Art Exhibition, the Asahi Ceramic Exhibition, the Issuikai Ceramic Exhibition, and the Japan Traditional Crafts Chugoku Branch Exhibition.

The underside bears the artist’s inscription. The wooden box is hand-inscribed and sealed by the artist, and the original cloth with seal is also included.

Very good used condition with minimal wear. The original cloth is included. Please refer to the photos for details.
