Box - Brass, Wood - engraved brass

Elegant old brass box engraved with a Japonisme-inspired decoration, dating from the early 20th century (around 1900–1930).

The lid is finely adorned with a scene inspired by Japan, depicting figures in kimono in a landscape with trees, a river, and a boat. This type of decoration fits into the Japonisme movement, very fashionable in Europe at that time.

The interior is wood, with a functional hinged lid. The box bears a maker's mark “W&F” (or W&J depending on reading).

Object probably intended to contain cigarettes or small desk items.

Condition: Good overall for its age — patina of wear and traces of oxidation on the brass — Interior wood in excellent condition.
