Virgen Orante, Baroque devotional oil painting on canvas from Italy, 17th century, 54 × 65 cm with frame.
Description from the seller
Title: Icon of the Virgin in Adoration
School: Italian (17th Century)
Style: Devotional Baroque
Technique: Oil on canvas
The present work depicts the Virgin Mary in an attitude of reverence and prayer, with hands joined and the head gently inclined to one side, conveying a deep sense of serenity and spirituality. The treatment of the face, with delicate features and introspective expression, shows a clear influence of Italian Baroque, where contained emotion and devotion are essential elements.
The composition centers on the solitary figure against a dark background that accentuates the intimate character of the scene, following the tenebrism principles. The illumination softly falls on the face and hands, creating a contrast that highlights the volumes and adds psychological depth to the image. The color palette is sober, dominated by earthy tones, blacks, and grays, with slight reddish nuances in the inner garments, imparting warmth to the whole.
The brushwork is restrained and precise, with special attention to the modeling of the face and the folds of the veil, which reinforces the sense of volume and naturalism characteristic of Italian devotional Baroque painting.
The work is presented framed in an elaborately carved wooden frame of rich ornamental wealth. It features relief decoration with geometric and undulating motifs, combining gold and silver finishes with an aged patina that gives it character and authenticity. The ensemble includes an inner red mat that enhances the work and creates an elegant visual contrast. The frame, of notable presence, complements the classic aesthetics of the painting and enhances its decorative value.
Observations:
The work shows restorations.
