A pair of gilded bronze Koro temple incense burners from Japan, dating to about 1950–1960, each 60 cm high, 24 cm wide and 24 cm deep, richly decorated with Buddha hands, bat-shaped hangers, a hexagonal central lantern with floral lotus motifs and openwork lattice, in good used condition with patina and minor damage to one Buddha hand.
Description from the seller
An impressive and rare pair of Japanese or Chinese temple lanterns/incense burners (Koro), probably from the mid-20th century. These impressive pieces are crafted with attention to detail and have a monumental appearance.
The objects are richly decorated with classical Eastern symbolism. At the top they are crowned with detailed so-called 'Buddha hands', which in Asian iconography symbolize happiness, a long life and prosperity.
The burners on the top are provided with characteristic hangers in the shape of bats. In Eastern culture the bat is a powerful symbol of fortune and wealth.
The central lantern has a hexagonal shape with raised panels on which floral motifs (likely lotus blossoms) are depicted. With beautifully open latticework around the edges, which creates a stunning interplay of light or smoke diffusion when in use. The pair is in good, authentic condition with a beautiful patina appropriate to their age. The construction is very solid and heavy (they weigh 4 kg each).
The burners are in nice second-hand condition and show signs of use. One of the Buddha hands is slightly damaged (there is a dent and a small piece of the stem of the plant has broken off).
