Berber Kabyle - Rare Terracotta Jug - Jug - Terracotta

Rare Berber Kabyle Terracotta Jug – Algeria – Early 20th Century Beautiful and increasingly hard-to-find terracotta jug created by the Berber Kabyle population of Algeria, dating to the early 20th century, approximately 100 years old. This remarkable vessel is entirely handmade and decorated with traditional geometric motifs painted in black and earthy red tones over a warm ochre surface. The complex linear patterns and symbolic decorations are characteristic of Kabyle pottery traditions, where each motif carried aesthetic and cultural significance within daily tribal life. The elegant sculptural form, with its integrated handle and elongated pouring spout, combines functionality with strong decorative presence. The surface shows authentic age, natural wear, and patina consistent with long use and age, further enhancing the object’s ethnographic character. Examples of this quality and authenticity have become increasingly difficult to find on the market. The piece was acquired in Algeria shortly after the period of the Algerian–Moroccan conflicts and comes from an old North African collection. An exceptional decorative and ethnographic object, ideal for collectors of tribal art, Berber culture, or antique Mediterranean ceramics.
