Description from the seller
Clear half-crystal ensemble from Val Saint Lambert from the Rodin collection, created in the 1950s, comprising a large round salad bowl, a substantial centerpiece, and a matching circular tray. This set perfectly illustrates post-war decorative production, where the Belgian manufactory develops elegant and functional lines through a soberly modernist formal vocabulary. The luminous transparency of the half-crystal and the rhythmic repetition of the reliefs give these pieces a refined presence that is very characteristic of their era.
The large salad bowl features a deep hemispherical shape resting on a small circular subtly molded foot. Its wide rim is adorned with the famous Rodin molding, consisting of a regular succession of geometric motifs in shallow relief evoking cylindrical links or tubular segments connected to one another, forming a continuous frieze with a highly graphic rhythm. The centerpiece, flatter and broadly flared, repeats this same sculpted border, elegantly highlighting the piece’s ample silhouette and enhancing the play of light on the crystal. The round tray completes the ensemble in harmony with a low, elongated form, centered by a delicately festooned umbilicus, while the subtly wavy edge is defined by the same peripheral molding, a visual signature of the series.
The set is in good general condition with signs of use consistent with its age. The salad bowl shows chips visible at the bottom and on the inner walls. The centerpiece also shows signs of wear including some fine scratches and a few small discreet stains at the center of the basin. The tray retains good transparency and shows mainly light cutlery and general use scratches. No major damage to report.
The Rodin molding is one of the emblematic motifs of Val Saint Lambert in the 1950s and 1960s. Through its repetitive, structured, and almost architectural design, it reflects the shift toward purer and more geometric forms influenced by post-war decorative modernism. During this period, Val Saint Lambert glassworks broadly diversified its production in pressed-mmolded half-crystal to offer elegant, sturdy objects suitable for contemporary interiors. This collection testifies to the Belgian manufactory’s technical prowess, capable of combining precise molding, material quality, and aesthetics firmly anchored in its time.
Average dimensions are (Salad Bowl > Centerpiece > Tray):
- Diameter: 25.2 > 32.3 > 32.6 cm,
- Height: 9.2 > 7.3 > 3.4 cm,
- Total weight of the set: 4400 grams.
