The first edition of the Poems from 1636 is a monument in Dutch literature, in which the Renaissance lyric poetry of Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft is central. The book was curated by Jacob van der Burgh and issued by the famous cartographer Johan Blaeu, because Hooft himself had shifted his literary focus at that period to historiography. The collection contains a wide range of poetry, from Petrarchan sonnets about love to light-hearted songs and wedding poems. In this work Hooft's language is characterized by a renewed suppleness and a strong rhythm, with which he elevated the Dutch language to a literary instrument capable of matching the classical and Italian examples.
