Description from the seller
Figurine kakudji Luba - Kusu
Wood, tapestry nails, trade beads, bone, horn, skin (bijimba - magical material)
Weight: 1040 g
Height: 33.5 cm
Early 20th Century
Provenance: lot no. 328 of the 91st tribal art sale in 2019 at Zemanek-Münster
Kakudji fetishes exist in several ethnic groups such as the Luba and Kusu, which makes precise identification difficult. According to Marc Léo Félix, these statuettes called munsinju are placed on an iron pick or kept in a basket by fetishists. The size of this kakudji figure, which leaves no doubt, belongs to the first category mentioned by Marc Léo Félix and was therefore mounted on a metal stake in the ground.
The top of the figurine has retained its "bijimba" in its headdress and the fetish material is still present.
It is quite similar to the Kusu figure by Pierre Dartevelle which was sold on June 8, 2022 at Sotheby’s. (photo no. 6)
Attention. The base of the figure has been changed. (photos 4 and 5)
And the last two photographs of similar pieces:
A hunting fetish called "Misumba", Luba/Kusu
(taken by Émile Torday in 1908) and a kakudji Luba statue (Marcel Dumoulin collection, 1930s).
