Beautiful Russian Orthodox icon, often described as a “monthly icon” or Menaion, probably created in the 19th century.
Tempera on egg and gilded highlights on a wooden panel, featuring an illustrated liturgical calendar composed of numerous scenes and saints’ figures arranged in registers.
The decoration is distinguished by rich polychromy, a luminous golden background, and an ornamental frame with geometric and floral motifs.
Some scenes notably depict the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, saints, martyrs, monks and Orthodox bishops. Inscriptions in old Cyrillic.
A work of Russian iconographic tradition, both devotional and decorative.
Condition in keeping with age: wear, slight cracks and small losses visible.
