Description from the seller

Particularly a box made of rosewood and lined in brass, measuring 18 cm x 10 x 9 and weighing 320 g, dating from the early 1900s (Art Deco period). Handcrafted, it features on the lid a brass inlay worked in repoussé that reproduces a Cicada. This symbol is tied to the concept of immortality and resurrection and was chosen by Napoleon to link the new dynasty to the very origins of France. Some golden Cicadas were discovered in 1653 at Tournai in the tomb of Childeric I, founder in 457 of the Merovingian dynasty and father of Clovis I. They have been regarded as the oldest emblem of the French sovereigns.
Inside another peculiarity: on the lid a postcard with a dedication dated 1929 is fixed. The image depicts fantastical figures, two small gnomes playing with a hare and often associated with period illustrations or European postcards from the early 20th century. The composition recalls the realistic yet fairy-tale depictions typical of Gérard Lefaure, a prolific creator of postcards in the Belle Époque. His production focused on fantastic scenes, often using real models (actors or children) dressed as elves, gnomes, or fairy-tale characters. His works blend photography with artistic retouching. The characters often wear bright costumes (such as red and turquoise as we see) and interact with surreal objects, like the large white ball or the rabbit.
Not least, the autograph inscription bearing the date February 1929 and perhaps the photographer Gérard Lefaure’s signature.
This object, with signs of wear and patina consistent with its age, is truly rich in history and symbolism, making it a unique piece.
A splendid testament to the past, but at the same time a valuable antique item of great decorative value, distinctive and collectible for its excellent state of preservation.

Shipping will be fast and insured for the full value. The photos should be considered an integral part of the description. We do not ship outside Europe. At the end of the auction please check the message center where you will receive photos of the packaging and instructions for receipt."
