Off the Edge of Eden is a story of sailor-fishermen hired on one of the first cargo ships built for cod fishing.
Gone are the fine sailing ships they had always known; now they must relearn the trade on these boats where there is almost nothing to do.
But even if the vessel, if the fishing grounds change, some things remain immutable.
One must always entrust oneself to the ship’s captain, put one’s fortune in his hands, for it is he who decides the fishing locations; entrust one’s life to his hands, for it is he who holds the fate of all the men he takes aboard, the responsibility of a father for his children.
