Description from the seller
This is a painting by Gérard Grassère, an artist within the abstract-expressionist painting. He was trained by Isidoor Opsomer and was friends with Otto van Rees. In his work creativity is central as a means to achieve freedom and to break away from fear and narrow-mindedness.
His paintings show a strong love for color and paint and often contain deeper meanings, such as the interconnectedness between humans and nature. In works such as “Broken Circle and Elegy in Space” he depicts a person who approaches reality in a searching and cautious way.
Grassère drew inspiration from travels to, among other places, Spain and the South of France, but also from architecture, poetry and music. Although he was connected to groups such as “The Progressives,” he saw himself primarily as a cosmopolitan. From 1956 he exhibited internationally and carried out various commissions; his work is included in several public collections.
