Description from the seller
Antique Bohemian Amber Crystal Goblet – Engraving "Europe and the Bull" – ca. 1870
A beautifully executed example of 19th-century Bohemian crystal glass. This goblet (Pokal) is produced in the classic amber-stained technique, where the crystal is given a warm golden-yellow tint.
The absolute highlight of this piece is the extremely refined, handcrafted intaglio engraving. The front shows the mythological scene of the kidnapping of Europe by Zeus (in the form of a bull). The detailing in the bull’s muscular structure and the drapery of the clothing attests to high-quality craftsmanship. The other faces display a finely worked landscape with a castle/fortification architecture.
The goblet is richly decorated with facet cuts along the rim and the stem. The base on the underside is finished with a classic cut star motif.
